about

Tracks 1-14: Audiotone "Volume One" cassette
Track 15: Even Deeper from the H. Records cassette compilation "Exhibit A"
Tracks 16-24: Geoff Towner "Made-Up Songs [Improv]" cassette

Now fully entrenched in "Newtown life", I was spending most nights seeing bands and drinking beer. This next tape began as an experiment: recording songs totally impromptu & often late at night when I came home from being out, often with ridiculously nonsensical song titles. Some were bass & vocals, with others guitar & vocals... and some were kinda good ("Speed To My Window...", "Things Just Get Harder...") and some were TERRIBLE! "Tapdancing..." is just me tapping something for a minute! These were all recorded in my bedroom at Linthorpe St from 14/8/96 to 25/9/96 and was handed out to at least one person (Challinor). Several names were chosen before settling on Audiotone (Slo-Mo, Monochrome...) and this was pretty much the last of my shitty home-recorded tapes for a while.

One night in 1996 a bunch of us went to Cafe Blue to see our friends Eat The Menu (later The Mercy Bell) play. Afterwards we all went back to my house and my mate Richard Vogt recorded "Broken Hearted High School Boy" on his video camera, for inclusion on a tape released with his excellent 'zine "Circumstantial Evidence". I was still heavily in the throes of improvisational songwriting, an artform which i think was getting my Sal Paradise songs shelved, as I wasn't "finishing" lyrics to any of them. By October 1996 I did my last show with Sal Paradise and concentrated on just playing bass with el Mopa.

Fast forward to 2001! During our tenure with el Mopa, our drummer Bon & I started A Gold Star Secret: a vehicle for our own songs. This kept us busy from about 1997 to 2004-ish. But in 2001 I started a new improv song tape which was never released. 3 songs from 2001 followed by 2003 "working out" demos for the fourth Gold Star album. It ends with a 2004 demo of "Christmas Wish List", which ended up on a Traffic Sounds Christmas compilation, re-recorded by Bon, and was the final ever Gold Star song.
