about

Tracks 1-13, 21-22: Bedsitter "8:22 Looks Like Brad's Mum's Eyes" cassette
Tracks 14-20: Solowaifer "21/11/94" cassette
Tracks 23-27: Geoff & Stu: "8/2/95" cassette

So after I handed out a few copies of the Superwaif tape to friends mid-1994 and got a strongly positive reaction, I started writing & recording like a maniac (still ultra lo-fi & straight into a boombox, it was the only easy recording option available to me). Fellow western suburbanite musician friends Darren Cross (Gerling) & Dave Challinor (future Sal Paradise/Sounds Like Sunset guy) were instrumental in supplying the confidence needed to keep doing this.

The first 10 songs were recorded in one sitting on the 15th August 1994, influenced by comics, TV shows & jokes between my brother and I. I remember being unhappy with the sound of these songs compared to the Superwaif tape (we'll get back to that...)

The next 3 songs (tracks 11-13) were recorded on the 6th September 1994, maybe only because my friends on the Against The Grain radio show were after promos to play at the start of their show. Challinor also did one at the same time! I chucked 2 other songs on and sent it to a handful of people, including the guys from Newtown band The Crux, who loved it! This tape ended up getting me a position in the band when they changed name to Sal Paradise in 1996. Tapes by Challinor also scored him a spot in them too!

Jump forward a bit to the 22nd of December 1994 when I recorded a song called Epiphora that i was REALLY happy with! I played it over the phone to Darren, who came up with the "Spraining Gift" part of the title.
It was very influenced by the new wave of post-grunge bands that were coming out of the U.S. (Lotion, Superchunk,

The next song "Dancing On Morrisey's Grave" was recorded on the 20th of January 1995 and utilised the drum machine part of the family Yamaha organ, for an Unrest kinda vibe. There's a phone ringing at the end.

These songs were all put together on a tape which I don't think I sent to anyone, under the name of Bedsitter. The title "8:22 Looks Like Brad's Mum's Eyes" was something that Darren said at our house when he looked at a digital clock (Brad being Brad Herdson, also of Gerling).

Stepping back again to the 21st of November 1994, where I re-recorded a bunch of songs from the beginning of this collection. Tracks 14-20 were (mainly) improvements on the original versions and are a very rare occurrence of me re-recording something. That usually never happens! They were on a tape under the name Solowaifer, simply called "21/11/94", which didn't get shown to anybody.

Fast forward again to the 8th of February 1995 for the final part of these songs. Stu from The Dead Tree had been liking my songs, and so we decided to record a few at his house together with him on drums. Tracks 23-27 were recorded on Darren's borrowed dictaphone recorder, as he had had great success using it to record himself. I think we used the old Dead Tree "Toy Mic" for the vocals, which sound muddy as fuck on these songs! These 5 songs - including a re-recorded Epiphora - were given out to few friends (who really liked it!) on a tape simply called Geoff & Stu "8/2/95". Dunno why I didn't continue doing stuff with Stu on drums. That was a mistake.
