about

After The Dead Tree broke up late in 1992, I spent the next year and a half honing my craft in the bedroom, leaving metal behind for the upper echelons of "indie rock" and learning how to play guitar and sing at the same time (something I always had problems with doing in The Dead Tree).

On the 25th May 1994, I was bored and decided to record a bunch of the new songs I'd been writing, sitting crosslegged in front of my practice amp with a ghetto blaster situated on top of that, singing and playing straight to "2 track". I remember being pretty chuffed that I managed to record ALL 18 songs in one marathon session from morning to evening.

Where The Dead Tree lyrically had a variety of styles: absurdism with no meaning (blatant "in-jokes"), absurdism masking meaning and also songs that had no metaphor whatsover, these new songs were wrapped in layers of metaphor that hid a lot of meaning from the listener. Song titles were picked with "cleverness" in mind. Lyrics were often about imagined scenarios. The first and last songs were made up on the spot.

Only a handful of tapes were distributed to friends. If I had a second chance, maybe I would've made more copies and put them in Waterfront and Redeye! Most of the songs are pretty embarrassing now, but a few are still okay. The fidelity is pretty awful too.

These songs were "released" under the name Superwaif and the title of the cassette was "Bedroom".
